Why Was My Skip Collection Delayed? (The Honest Truth About Logistics)
If you look at the 1-star reviews for almost any skip hire company in the UK, the complaint is almost always the same: “They dropped it off on time, but it’s been sitting on my drive for three days and they won’t pick it up!”
It’s frustrating. You’ve finished your project, you want your driveway back, and the “metal eyesore” is still there. So, why does this happen? We’re pulling back the curtain on the three main reasons for collection delays.
1. The “Weight” Wait
Sometimes, a skip is too heavy for the truck to legally lift. If a customer fills a 12-yard skip (meant for light bulky waste) with 10 tonnes of concrete, our truck’s hydraulic system will hit its safety limit and refuse to lift.
- Result: We have to dispatch a specialized “heavy-lift” vehicle, which might be tied up on another job.
2. The Traffic & Tipping “Logjam”
Skip trucks don’t just drive to you; they have to drive to the Waste Transfer Station to empty the load before they can pick up the next one. If the local tip has a mechanical breakdown or a 2-hour queue at the weighbridge, it creates a “domino effect.”
- The Reality: One flat tyre or one closed road in [Your City] can knock three hours off a driver’s schedule, meaning the last three collections of the day get pushed to tomorrow.
3. Access Issues
If a neighbor has parked their car slightly too close to the skip, or if a new delivery van is blocking the street, the driver can’t get the “swing arms” out.
- The Problem: The driver usually has 10-15 minutes per stop. If they can’t get access, they have to move to the next job to avoid making everyone else late.
